Will TikTok ruin your video?

Drop your MP4 or MOV. It is checked in your browser, on your computer: codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, HDR. You get a one-line verdict and the exact export settings to fix it in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut or After Effects.

The exact export fix, by editor

These are the settings TikTok re-encodes the least: H.264 High, 1080 x 1920, 30 fps, 10 Mbps target, SDR Rec.709, AAC 320 kbps. After you check a file above, the values below change to match it.

  1. Sequence: Sequence Settings, frame size 1080 x 1920, timebase 30 fps. For iPhone HDR clips, set Working Color Space to Rec. 709 and tick Auto Tone Map Media.
  2. Export (Ctrl/Cmd + M): Format H.264, container MP4.
  3. Video: untick Match Source. Frame Size 1080 x 1920, Frame Rate 30, Field Order Progressive, Aspect Square Pixels (1.0), Profile High, Level 4.1.
  4. Bitrate: VBR, 2 pass, Target 10 Mbps, Maximum 12 Mbps.
  5. Color: Output Color Space Rec. 709 (SDR).
  6. Audio: AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo, 320 kbps.

4K: a 2160 x 3840 export is accepted, but TikTok scales it down to 1080 x 1920 with its own encoder, so export 1080 x 1920 yourself. 60 fps: see the FAQ below.

Questions

Why does TikTok lower my video quality?
TikTok re-encodes every upload into its own playback versions. How much it changes depends on what you send: a file that is already H.264, 1080 x 1920, 30 fps, SDR and 8-12 Mbps gets a light pass; HEVC, HDR, 4K, high frame rates or a very high bitrate get a heavy conversion, and that second encode is the blur and the washed-out colour you see. Posting from the phone app can add one more compression before the file even leaves the phone.
What are the best export settings for TikTok?
MP4, H.264 High profile, 1080 x 1920 (9:16), 30 fps (or the 24 or 25 you shot at), VBR 2-pass at a 10 Mbps target and 12 Mbps maximum, SDR Rec.709 8-bit, AAC audio at 320 kbps, 48 kHz. The tabs above show where each one is in your editor.
Should I upload at 60 fps?
TikTok accepts 60 fps, but it re-encodes high frame rates more often, and the extra frames take bitrate that would otherwise go to sharpness. Export at 30 fps unless motion is the point (fast edits, gaming); then export 60 fps at 12-15 Mbps and accept that TikTok may convert it.
Should I upload in 4K?
A 2160 x 3840 file is accepted, but TikTok scales it down to 1080 x 1920 with its own encoder. Downscale it yourself in your editor to 1080 x 1920, so the resize happens where you control the quality.
Why does my HDR video look washed out on TikTok?
iPhones and many Android phones record HDR (HLG or Dolby Vision, 10-bit) by default. TikTok converts HDR to 8-bit SDR, and that tone-mapping flattens contrast and colour. Export SDR Rec.709 8-bit from your editor, or turn off HDR before filming (iPhone: Settings, Camera, Record Video, HDR Video off).

Post it from your PC so TikTok gets the file as you exported it.
