Questions people ask
Does it tell me which hashtags are banned?
No. Instagram does not publish a list of banned or restricted hashtags, and nobody outside Meta has a real one. The checker flags patterns Instagram has been seen restricting (like #followforfollow). To check one tag, search it in Instagram: if recent posts are hidden or there is a notice, it is restricted.
How many hashtags can I use?
Instagram refuses more than 30. YouTube ignores all of them past 60 and shows the first 3 above the title. Threads turns only one tag per post into a topic. TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky and Mastodon have no set number, but they count toward the character limit.
Why CamelCase?
#SmallBusiness is easier to read than #smallbusiness, and screen readers say it word by word. Mastodon users ask for it. It links to the same tag on every network.
Why does #social-media not work?
A hashtag ends at the first character that is not a letter, a digit or an underscore. #social-media links #social. Write #SocialMedia instead.
