Free social media character counter

Type once, see the count on every network as that network counts it: X's weighted characters (a link is 23, an emoji 2), Bluesky's graphemes, Threads' emoji bytes, Mastodon's 23-character links. Plus where the feed hides the rest behind "more".

Free, no signup. Made by PostWire, which writes a native post for each network and publishes it to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook Pages, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord (X on paid plans). Updated .

How it works

  1. Paste or type your post

It is counted in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.

  2. Read the count per network

Each row uses that network's own rule and limit; red means it would be refused or cut.

  3. Check the part before "more"

Pick a network to see the words a reader sees before tapping "more": that is where the hook has to be.

Questions people ask

Why does X count my post longer than other counters?

X weighs characters: every link counts 23 whatever its length, an emoji counts 2, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count 2. This counter uses the same rules as X's own library (twitter-text v3), the ones PostWire checks before publishing.

How does Bluesky count characters?

Bluesky allows 300 graphemes: what a person sees as one character. A family emoji made of 7 code points counts 1.

Why do emojis count more on Threads?

Threads counts an emoji as its UTF-8 bytes, usually 4. A 480-character post with five emojis is about 495, so it can pass elsewhere and fail on Threads.

What is the "see more" cut-off?

Feeds show the first lines and fold the rest: about 125 characters on Instagram, about 210 on LinkedIn on a computer (fewer on a phone), about 100 on TikTok over the video. They vary with the screen, so treat them as approximate.

Are the limits up to date?

They are the limits PostWire's publisher enforces before it sends a post (checked on 9 October 2026). Mastodon servers can raise their 500; the counter uses the default.

Then publish it everywhere, from one place.

PostWire writes a different post for each network from one idea and publishes or schedules them together, from a dashboard, Claude or ChatGPT, n8n, Make, Zapier or a REST API. Every network connects free; the free plan needs no card.
