How to use TikTok's Direct Post API without doing your own app audit

You can't make public Direct Posts with your own TikTok app until TikTok audits it: unaudited clients may only post SELF_ONLY (private), for up to 5 users in 24 hours, whose accounts must be private (TikTok's Content Sharing Guidelines, read Oct 1, 2026). The alternative is to post through an API whose TikTok app already passed the audit: PostWire's did on July 7, 2026, so your users connect TikTok with one OAuth click and you publish publicly with POST /api/post and "privacy": "public".

PostWire went through TikTok's audit itself (two rejections, both for the Website URL field, before approval) — the timeline is on our TikTok approval page. The audit doesn't remove TikTok's per-creator cap: Direct Post is limited to around 15 posts a day per creator account, shared across all apps.

Written from PostWire's own code and checked on Oct 1, 2026. Live networks: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn (personal profiles), Facebook Pages, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Discord — not X, Threads, Reddit or Pinterest.

Step by step

  1. Create a free PostWire account

    Open postwire.io/dashboard.html, type your email and press Create my free account. PostWire emails you a link to confirm the address; connecting accounts and publishing unlock once it is confirmed. No password and no card (free plan: 1 business, 30 posts a month, 15 AI drafts a day, every live network, no card).

  2. Connect the TikTok account

    For your own account: Accounts → Connect → Continue to TikTok. For a client or end user: create a one-hour connect link (POST /api/connect-link, or the dashboard's Generate connect link) and send it — they sign in on TikTok, never sharing a password.

  3. Copy your API key

    In the dashboard, open API & MCP and press Copy key on the API key card. It is sent as Authorization: Bearer pw_live_… (the X-API-Key header also works). Keep it server-side.

  4. Upload the video (or use a public URL)

    Files over 50 MB upload in parts. Up to 1 GB.

    POST /api/media/upload-url   {"content_type":"video/mp4","size_bytes":48211234}
    → {"path":"…","upload_url":"…"}         # then PUT the bytes to upload_url
    GET  /api/media/finalize?path=…
    → {"ok":true,"media_url":"https://postwire.io/m/…"}
  5. Publish publicly with Direct Post

    Set privacy explicitly; without it the post is private (SELF_ONLY).

    curl -X POST https://postwire.io/api/post \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer pw_live_…" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
      -d '{"platforms":["tiktok"],"video_url":"https://postwire.io/m/…","text":"Three steps instead of nine.","privacy":"public","options":{"tiktok":{"disable_duet":false,"disable_stitch":false}}}'
  6. Poll until TikTok finishes processing

    GET /api/post/status?platform=tiktok&id=… returns the state and, once live, the link. Add "instagram", "youtube" or "linkedin" to platforms to send the same post to those networks in the same call.

TikTok's Direct Post rules still apply to every post: the creator's privacy options, comment/duet/stitch settings, and the disclosure toggles (brand_organic_toggle, branded_content_toggle — branded content can't be private). PostWire also accepts TikTok photo posts of up to 35 images.

Where the others are ahead of PostWire

  • Your own audited app has no middleman and no per-business plan. It takes TikTok's review — ours took two rejections.
  • Ayrshare and Upload-Post also cover X, Threads and Pinterest, with SDKs (Ayrshare) and more destinations (Upload-Post). PostWire has 9 networks and no SDK.

Questions people ask

Can I use TikTok's Direct Post API without an audit?

Yes, but only privately: TikTok restricts unaudited clients to SELF_ONLY posts, up to 5 users posting in 24 hours, and those accounts must be private at the time of posting. Public posting requires the audit — or an API whose app already passed it.

What does the TikTok audit check?

Compliance with TikTok's Terms of Service and Content Sharing Guidelines, including the posting UX (privacy selection with no default, interaction settings, content disclosure, music usage confirmation). Our two rejections were both about the Website URL field; the full timeline is at postwire.io/platforms/tiktok/approval/.

Is there a limit on posts per day after the audit?

Yes. TikTok caps Direct Post per creator account in a 24-hour window — typically around 15 posts per day — shared across all apps posting to that account.

Does PostWire support TikTok drafts (the inbox upload)?

No. PostWire uses Direct Post only; the post is published with the privacy you choose.

Can I post to TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn in one call?

Yes: POST /api/post with platforms ["tiktok","instagram","linkedin"]. TikTok and Instagram need a video (or photos); LinkedIn takes text, images or a document but not video.
