How to automate Instagram posts
Automate the publishing, not the engagement: everything below posts your own content through Instagram's official API, from an app Meta has reviewed.
Updated . Written from PostWire's own code; vendor prices read on Oct 11, 2026. Live networks: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn (personal profiles), Facebook Pages, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Discord, and X on paid plans.
Set it up once, then pick what drives the posts
- Create a free PostWire account
Open postwire.io/dashboard.html, type your email and press Create my free account. PostWire emails you a link to confirm the address; connecting accounts and publishing unlock once it is confirmed. No password and no card (free plan: 1 business, 20 posts a month, 5 AI drafts a day (about 20 a month), 2 networks per post, 3 scheduled posts at a time — every network connects free, no card).
- Connect Instagram
Accounts → Connect on Instagram. Choose Log in with Instagram (works with any Business or Creator account, no Facebook Page) or Through a Facebook Page you manage. The account must be a Business or Creator account (switching is free, in Instagram's settings); a personal account cannot be posted to through the API. PostWire's Meta App Review was approved on July 14, 2026, so you do not create a Meta app. Details.
- Way 1 — a queue: write now, publish at your times
Write the post, add the photo or video and press Schedule: Add to queue takes a date and time, Next free slot uses the next free time of your weekly queue slots (Queue → Queue slots). A video goes out as a Reel, several photos as a carousel. The free plan keeps 3 posts waiting at once; paid plans have no such cap.
- Way 2 — a spreadsheet: a month in one upload
Automate → Bulk upload takes a CSV with one row per post:
date,networks,textandmedia_url(Instagram needs it). Every row is checked before anything is scheduled, and a row with a problem says which. One upload takes 20 rows on the free plan and 500 on Starter. The same columns work from a shared Google Sheet that PostWire keeps reading: Google Sheets as a content calendar. - Way 3 — a recurring post (paid plans)
Automate → Recurring: a post that repeats daily, weekly on the weekdays you pick, or monthly, optionally rotating through several versions of the text so followers do not see the same caption twice. Each occurrence appears in the queue a week ahead, where you can edit or cancel it alone. Starter keeps 25 recurring posts.
- Way 4 — your blog's RSS feed
Automate → RSS feeds: paste the feed, tick Instagram, and each new article becomes a post with the article's image. An item with no image leaves Instagram out and says so, because Instagram takes no text-only posts. The first read only records what is already in the feed, so nothing old is posted. The free plan has 1 feed, read every 6 hours; Starter has 25, read every 1 hour, and can write the caption per network with AI.
- Way 5 — n8n, Make, Zapier or your own code
Copy your key under API & MCP and send one request per post from an HTTP step, or use the PostWire node in n8n (step by step).
run_atsets the time; the same body sent to/api/postpublishes now:POST https://postwire.io/api/schedule Authorization: Bearer pw_live_… Content-Type: application/json // A Reel on Friday at 9:00 { "platforms": ["instagram"], "text": "{{ caption }}", "video_url": "https://…/reel.mp4", "run_at": "2026-10-16T09:00:00-05:00" } // A carousel (2–10 photos or videos) in the next free queue slot { "platforms": ["instagram"], "text": "…", "media": ["https://…/1.jpg", "https://…/2.jpg", "https://…/3.jpg"], "run_at": "next_slot" } - Way 6 — an AI agent
Add
https://postwire.io/api/mcpto Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor and say "schedule this photo for Instagram tomorrow at 9 with a caption about the new menu". The agent callsgenerate_postsfor the caption andschedule_postto queue it. Setup: Instagram MCP server.
Media links must be public: a direct link to the file, or a Google Drive or Dropbox share link open to anyone who has it. A file on your phone or laptop is uploaded in the dashboard, or through POST /api/media/upload-url from code.
Tools that automate Instagram posts, side by side
Each vendor's own page, read on Oct 11, 2026.
| Tool | What can drive the posts | Writes the caption | Free plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| PostWire | Queue slots, CSV or Google Sheet, recurring posts, RSS, n8n, REST API, MCP agent | Yes — per network, from one idea | 20 posts a month, 1 business |
| Upload-Post | Its API, n8n, Make, Zapier, AI agents | Not listed on its guide | 10 uploads a month, 2 profiles |
Checked on Oct 11, 2026 (2026-10-11) on each vendor's own pricing or docs page, linked in the first column and below. Monthly billing in USD unless noted. "Not listed" means we could not find it on their page, not that it is missing.
Where PostWire is ahead
- Six ways in, one account: the queue, the spreadsheet, the recurring post and the RSS feed need no code and no workflow tool; n8n, the API and the MCP server are there when the content comes from somewhere else.
- The caption is written for Instagram, and each other network's version with it, in the same request.
- 20 posts a month on the free plan, with the API and the MCP server. Upload-Post's free plan has 10 uploads a month.
- Media links are checked when you schedule: a link that does not answer with a file is named then, not when the post was due.
- The same post goes to nine more networks: TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook Pages, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Discord, and X on paid plans.

What can and cannot be automated on Instagram
- Can be: a photo, a video (published as a Reel), a carousel of 2 to 10 photos and videos, and a Story (
options.instagram.post_type: "story"). - Needs a photo or a video: Instagram has no text-only posts. If you only have text, Make an image from this post in the dashboard turns it into an image, and
POST /api/media/carddoes the same from code. - Images as JPEG: Instagram's API takes JPEG only, so PostWire converts PNG, WebP and AVIF before sending.
- Captions up to 2,200 characters. Instagram counts hashtags, mentions and some emoji its own way and can refuse a caption that looks short enough; PostWire then sends it once more, shortened to fit, and the result tells you — the post is not lost.
- Long videos finish by themselves: Instagram processes a video before it can be published. When that takes longer than the request, PostWire publishes it on a later run and the post's status shows when it is live.
- Business and Creator accounts only: a personal account has to be switched first, which is free. A Reel goes out with the audio that is in your video file.

Automating the caption with AI
Every way above can leave the caption to PostWire. Give it the idea in a sentence and it writes the Instagram version: a short caption with the hook in the first line, a few hashtags at the end and one clear call to action — and, in the same request, the LinkedIn, TikTok or Facebook version of the same news, each in that network's style. Over the API it is POST /api/generate; in n8n, Smart Distribute; from an agent, generate_posts. The free plan includes 5 AI drafts a day.
What it does not do: PostWire does not create the photo or edit the video, and it does not like, follow, comment or send messages for you.
Questions people ask
Can you automate Instagram posts?
Yes. Instagram's official API publishes photos, Reels, carousels and Stories for Business and Creator accounts, and scheduling tools publish through it. With PostWire you connect the account once and posts go out from a queue, a spreadsheet, a recurring post, an RSS feed, n8n, the REST API or an AI agent.
How do I automate Instagram posts for free?
PostWire's free plan does it without a card: 1 business, 20 posts a month, 3 posts waiting in the queue at once, 20 rows per CSV upload and 1 RSS feed, with the API and the MCP server included.
Can I automate Instagram posts with AI?
Yes, in two ways. PostWire writes the caption from one idea (5 AI drafts a day on the free plan), and an AI agent such as Claude or ChatGPT can schedule the posts for you through PostWire's MCP server at https://postwire.io/api/mcp.
Can I automate Instagram posts with n8n?
Yes. The community node n8n-nodes-postwire publishes or schedules a photo, a Reel or a carousel with Networks set to Instagram; on n8n Cloud an HTTP Request to https://postwire.io/api/post does the same. You do not need your own Meta app.
Do I need a Facebook Page to automate Instagram posts?
Not with PostWire's Log in with Instagram option, which works with any Instagram Business or Creator account. A personal Instagram account can't be posted to through the API.
Can I automate Reels, carousels and Stories?
Yes. A video is published as a Reel, 2 to 10 photos or videos as a carousel, and options.instagram.post_type set to "story" publishes a Story. Text-only posts do not exist on Instagram.
Is automating Instagram posts against Instagram's rules?
PostWire publishes your own content through Instagram's official API, as an app Meta reviewed and approved on July 14, 2026. It does not automate likes, follows, comments or messages, and it never asks for your Instagram password: you sign in on Instagram's own page.
Try it on one business, free.
The free plan is 1 business, 20 posts a month, 5 AI drafts a day (about 20 a month) and 2 networks per post — every network connects free, no card, no time limit. Paid plans start at $9 a month and have a 14-day refund; Pro can be tried free for 7 days, with a card at checkout and nothing charged that day.
